What you’ll learn…

Your Essential Study Companion for Level 2 Success

Taking your first steps into the world of counselling is an exciting challenge, but the CPCAB syllabus can feel overwhelming at the start. Whether you’re struggling to put your skills into words for your Learning Journal or you want to see what a ‘Pass’ level skills session actually looks like, we’ve got you covered.

Explore the sections to find expert-led videos designed to mirror your Level 2 journey. From mastering the basics of active listening to understanding the “why” behind the CPCAB model, these modules provide the clarity you need to move from a “helper” to a confident student practitioner.

Our Level 2 library is designed to move you from “natural listener” to “skilled practitioner.” We break down the CPCAB units into clear, visual modules that focus on the foundation of the helping relationship.

Active listening, brain plasticity and gratitude

This section bridges the gap between fundamental technique and the science of human change. You will master the essential art of Active Listening, learning to hold professional space through silence and reflection. We then ground these skills in the “why” of the counselling process, exploring the neuroscience of Brain Plasticity to understand how the brain rewires during therapy, alongside the psychological impact of Gratitude in building client resilience and lasting well-being.

Discovery, environment and paraphrasing

In this section, we examine the essential “external and internal” conditions required for effective counselling. You will learn how to create a professional Environment that ensures safety and confidentiality, alongside the Discovery process, where you support the client in uncovering new insights. To facilitate this, we provide a deep dive into Paraphrasing, demonstrating how to accurately reflect a client’s words to build a shared understanding and encourage deeper self-exploration.

Further counselling skills

In this module, we focus on the art of advanced empathy and practitioner discipline. You will learn the psychological importance of working with silence, moving from seeing it as an “awkward gap” to using it as a profound therapeutic tool that allows for client reflection. By mastering these techniques, you will learn how to maintain an unwavering focus on the helpee’s needs, ensuring your own agenda stays out of the room so the client has the space they need to explore and grow.

This video will help you fix the most common mistakes that lead to a referral/fail.

Empathy, change, strength and resources

In this module, we explore the core drivers of therapeutic progress. You will learn the professional application of Empathy and Tolerance in helping and how to hold a non-judgmental space even in challenging sessions. We ground these skills in the “why” of the therapeutic journey – examining how Change occurs and how to help clients tap into their own internal Strengths and Resources. These videos are designed to help you move beyond simply “listening” to actively facilitating a client’s capacity for resilience and growth.

CPCAB's 7 processes and preferred future

In this module, we decode the structural backbone of your training. You will get a definitive walkthrough of the CPCAB Model of Practitioner Development and Proficiency, learning exactly how to evidence your growth across the different layers of the syllabus. We then connect this to the therapeutic journey itself, exploring the 7 Stages of Process to understand how clients move through change. Finally, we look at the Preferred Future, a goal-oriented concept that helps you support clients in identifying where they want to be, ensuring your practice is as purposeful as it is professional.

Ethics and resilience

In this module, we tackle the essential framework that governs all professional counselling work. You will explore the practical application of Ethics and Boundaries, learning how to navigate complex dilemmas, maintain “safe space,” and stay aligned with the BACP Ethical Framework. Beyond the rules, we focus on the practitioner’s wellbeing, providing strategies for Resilience to help you manage the emotional demands of helping work. These videos are vital for any student looking to demonstrate a high standard of professional safety and ethical maturity in their portfolio.

Setting and maintaining boundaries

In this module, we examine the practical application of professional limits in your work. You will learn the art of Setting and Maintaining Boundaries within a helping relationship, ensuring the space remains therapeutic rather than social. We then dive into the critical concept of Limits of Proficiency, providing you with the tools to identify when a client’s needs exceed your current level of training. These videos are essential for any student needing to demonstrate “safe and ethical practice” and are designed to give you the confidence to manage complex professional situations with clarity.

Difference and diversity

In this module, we explore the essential professional requirements for working with Difference and Diversity. You will gain a deeper understanding of how Prejudice, Discrimination, and Unconscious Bias can impact the counselling room, even when we have the best intentions. These videos provide the tools to identify your own “blind spots” and understand the social dynamics of power and privilege. This section is vital for any student needing to demonstrate a commitment to equality and the ethical maturity required to work respectfully with clients from all walks of life.

Recorded skills practice and life maps

In this module, we bridge the gap between theory and practice. You will learn the best practices for Recorded Skills Practice, focusing on how to use self-reflection and peer feedback to refine your technique and meet your assessment criteria. We then move into the creative application of Life Maps, a powerful visual tool used to help clients explore their personal history and identify key life transitions. These videos provide you with a structured approach to both your own professional development and the innovative tools you can use to facilitate client discovery.

Flourishing and the final close

In this concluding module, we focus on the ultimate goal of the helping relationship: empowering the client to thrive independently. You will learn the psychological principles of Flourishing, moving beyond the absence of distress toward the presence of psychological well-being and vitality. We provide a practical guide to Setting Goals within a client-led framework, ensuring that progress is measurable and meaningful. Finally, we explore the “Final Close,” teaching you how to manage the ending of the counselling relationship with sensitivity and professional integrity, ensuring the client leaves with a sense of closure and the resources to maintain their growth.

Want to further develop your skills?

We get it, being a counsellor is all about helping others.

But it’s essential to take some time for yourself, too. In fact, it’s a requirement once you’ve become fully qualified, in the form of CPD, and also key to helping you best help your clients.

So, in order to help you with your personal development and develop your practice, we’ve put together an exciting line-up of live sessions that are not only really interesting but also seriously useful for both trainee and qualified counsellors. Think of it as a cosy chat over coffee, but with some top-notch learning thrown in. Fancy diving into new therapeutic techniques or brushing up on your counselling skills? You’re in the right place!

With 2 sessions every month they offer plentiful opportunities for collaboration, sharing and questions, with a combination of our in-house tutors and expert guest speakers bringing a wide range of experience and expertise to each session.

But there’s more! With your seminar subscription, you’ll get access to recordings of all our past seminars, so you can binge-watch to your heart’s content, whenever you fancy. It’s like having a constantly growing library of counselling wisdom at your fingertips.

And each seminar that you attend or watch will count towards your annual CPD.
