Taking your first step to becoming a counsellor

Becoming a qualified counsellor

Counselling is a challenging yet rewarding career. As a counsellor, you’ll work with clients from all backgrounds, helping them to cope with and overcome, often deeply rooted, issues – truly making a difference to their lives.

Taking the right steps to become a qualified counsellor is a vital part of this journey. Gaining the necessary qualifications not only ensures you have the skills and knowledge to support your clients effectively but also provides a safe and secure foundation for your professional practice.

Our CPCAB-accredited courses offer all the essentials you need to gain the skills, knowledge and experience you need to operate as a counsellor, and you can learn more about each of them on the course pages below.

Becoming a qualified counsellor

Once you have completed your initial training, the next step is reaching fully qualified practitioner status so you can practice professionally and gain membership with professional bodies like the BACP or NCPS.

Depending on your current qualification, you can progress sequentially through CPCAB Level 3 into the Level 4 Diploma, or take our tailored Fast Track to Level 4 route if you are ready to jump straight into practitioner training.

This stage prepares you for working with clients experiencing common life problems, as well as enabling deeper therapeutic change within the self for clients facing mild to moderate common mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

To fit your lifestyle and learning preferences, we offer these qualified practitioner pathways through flexible online study, interactive regional hubs, or immersive residential options.

Developing your skills post-qualification

Once you’ve qualified as a counsellor, earned your BACP and NCPS membership, and gained experience helping your clients, you’re ready to define the next phase of your career.

Are you looking to become a counselling supervisor, launch your own private practice, or develop an advanced therapeutic specialism?

Our Level 5 and 6 post-qualification courses are designed to equip you with the skills and expertise needed for these next steps.

Our Level 5 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling course is designed to enable you to truly make more of a difference for the people you work with, growing your expertise and enabling you to support people with more complex challenges, all the while sharing experiences and techniques among your peers.

Additionally, our specialist Level 5 CBT course provides in-depth training on applying this sought-after approach.

If your goal is to transition from practitioner to leader and achieve supervisory status, our Level 6 Supervision course teaches a proven supervision model and focuses on building the supportive supervisory relationship that fosters growth and resilience in other counsellors.

These qualifications are awarded by the CPCAB, a nationally recognised and industry-leading counselling training body, ensuring your expertise is respected across the profession.

We also offer a flexible Counselling Seminar Subscription to help you meet and exceed your annual CPD requirements.
