As a counsellor, Stoke-on-Trent is a vibrant and rewarding city to both live and work in. Renowned worldwide for its iconic ceramics industrial heritage and proud working-class identity, Stoke-on-Trent provides a unique professional environment where industrial tradition meets ongoing urban regeneration and clinical innovation.

With a diverse population across the Six Towns and a strong regional emphasis on mental health, there is a significant and rising demand for therapeutic services across the city. This provides aspiring and qualified counsellors with a wealth of opportunities, from establishing a private practice in the city’s commercial hubs to working within the NHS or Stoke-on-Trent’s active charitable sector. Stoke-on-Trent’s varied community, ranging from its expanding university student body to long-standing local residents and industrial workforces, offers practitioners the chance to engage with a broad spectrum of backgrounds, cultures, and therapeutic needs.

Moreover, Stoke-on-Trent is home to a deeply interconnected network of mental health services that foster a genuinely supportive professional community. The city is warm and welcoming, offering a high quality of life with its abundant green spaces, historic pottery quarters, and easy access to the surrounding Staffordshire countryside and Peak District. For a counsellor, this setting provides not only a distinct backdrop for work but also a grounding environment that supports personal wellbeing. Whether you are attending a professional development workshop at a local training institute or networking with peers near the university campus, you will find that Stoke-on-Trent’s mental health sector is defined by collaboration and a shared commitment to community wellbeing.

Mental health has become a defining priority for Stoke-on-Trent and the wider Staffordshire region. In recent years, local health partnerships and local government bodies have implemented ambitious strategies aimed at tackling health inequalities, supporting industrial communities, and improving emotional resilience across the city. This commitment is visible in integrated community initiatives and primary care networks that connect social prescribing and community-led support to help residents lead healthier, more connected lives. This city-wide focus on early intervention and holistic care ensures that mental health remains at the forefront of local policy, creating a stable and evolving landscape for mental health professionals to thrive in.

The city is supported by a sophisticated infrastructure where the NHS, private clinics, and local charities work in tandem. A key example of this collaborative spirit is the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Talking Therapies network, which brings together various organisations to streamline support and share resources. For a qualified counsellor, this means you are never working in isolation; you are part of a massive, region-wide effort to transform lives. The demand for skilled professionals is constant, especially as local authorities continue to prioritise efforts to close the gap in service provision for vulnerable groups, young people, and local families, offering you a genuine opportunity to make a lasting impact on the local community.

Stoke-on-Trent offers an expansive range of pathways for counsellors at every stage of their career. The city’s infrastructure allows you to specialise in niche areas, such as student mental health, bereavement care, community-based mental health, or trauma recovery. Whether you want to work in a clinical NHS setting or a grassroots community hub, the variety of organisations in Stoke-on-Trent is impressive.

Here are a few key examples of the organisations that form the backbone of Stoke-on-Trent’s mental health provision:

  • Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent Talking Therapies (NHS): The primary NHS Talking Therapies provider across the region, offering evidence-based treatments such as CBT and counselling to adults.
  • North Staffs Mind: A major local mental health charity operating out of Hanley, offering affordable counselling, adult support groups, and crisis services for adults, children, and young people.
  • The Dove Service: The primary specialist grief and loss charity based in Stoke-on-Trent, providing dedicated bereavement counselling to children, adults, and families.
  • Changes Health & Wellbeing: A long-established local charity offering mental health support, peer-led recovery groups, and community wellbeing services across Stoke-on-Trent.
  • North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust: A leading local NHS trust providing inpatient, community, and specialist mental health services throughout the region.
  • Staffordshire University Student Support Services: Provides comprehensive emotional, therapeutic, and mental health support services to a large student population in Stoke-on-Trent.
  • Ascend (Staffordshire): A specialist therapy service working locally to provide trauma-informed support and counselling for individuals impacted by abuse.

This is only a snapshot of the opportunities available! Stoke-on-Trent is a city where professional growth is encouraged and where the need for compassionate, qualified counsellors continues to grow. In the following sections, we’ll explore the specific training providers in Stoke-on-Trent that can help you gain the qualifications needed to join this rewarding professional landscape.

2. What qualifications are available to me?

So, what qualifications are on offer in Stoke to help you kickstart your career in counselling and/or psychotherapy?

Well, first of all, it’s worth noting that employers and clients are increasingly looking for counsellors and psychotherapists with qualifications that have been accredited by a professional body. So, this is a good place to start.

This is because counselling and psychotherapy aren’t legally regulated professions in the UK – technically, anyone can call themselves a therapist! Obviously, this is not ideal from the client’s point of view. Counselling and psychotherapy are challenging professions that can have a profound impact on people’s lives. Therefore, it’s essential therapists have the right skills and knowledge to handle sensitive and challenging situations. And the way for clients and employers to be sure this is the case is to choose therapists that are members of a reputable professional body.

In the UK, there are two major professional bodies for counselling, and you can find qualifications accredited by both of these bodies in Stoke. Let’s have a closer look at these options.

At this point, you may be wondering, “what’s the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?”. If this is the case, let us direct you to our ultimate guide to becoming a counsellor or psychotherapist in the UK. Here, we run through the subtle differences between these two professions.

Quite often, undertaking a counselling qualification will then allow you to progress on to a psychotherapy qualification. So here, we’re just going to be talking about the qualifications you need to become a counsellor.

The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)

The BACP is the largest professional counselling body in the UK. It promotes high ethical standards amongst its members, and therefore, gaining BACP membership can help you build your reputation as a counsellor and attract clients. To become a BACP member, you need to meet certain criteria, including completing an approved core practitioner course. To give you an idea of how much training is required, let’s take a look at an example qualification pathway that can be used to gain BACP membership.

This example qualification route involves taking a progression of CPCAB-accredited courses.

CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills
CPCAB Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies
CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling

Here, Level 2 requires 170 hours of training, Level 3 requires 196 hours of training and Level 4 requires 1,204 hours of training. It generally takes at least three to four years to complete a BACP-approved qualification such as this, as these courses are typically taught on a part-time basis. There are a variety of providers that offer BACP-accredited counselling courses in Stoke. We’ll look at these shortly!

The National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS)

NCS is the other major counselling professional body in the UK, and you also need to meet specific requirements to become a member, including completing an approved core practitioner course. The options are a bit more limited for NCS-accredited counselling courses in Stoke, with just one course provider offering this pathway.

At Astranti Connect, we recommend pursuing BACP membership as the preferred option between the two professional bodies, and you can find out why in our definitive guide to counselling qualifications.

Other options

Finally, there are a few other qualification options on offer in Stoke that do not fall into either of the above categories. These may be good options if you’re not interested in becoming a professional counsellor, but you’d like to learn some counselling skills. Some of these courses may offer a qualification that could contribute towards BACP or NCS accreditation if you decide to study more in the future. Other courses may not be accredited at all, however, and so it’s important to be aware that their quality will not have been validated by an external body.

3. Stoke counselling course providers

If you’re looking for counselling training providers in Stoke, the good news is that you’re not going to be short on options! There is a range of different providers offering counselling and psychotherapy training in Stoke, from universities and colleges to specialist providers.

Let’s take a look at the main options.

Universities and colleges

Traditional academic institutions in Stoke-on-Trent offer a variety of pathways, ranging from adult education up to undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

Stoke-on-Trent College: Located across Cauldon and Burslem campuses, Stoke-on-Trent College provides accessible adult learning routes, introductory helping skills, and vocational qualifications to help adult learners gain baseline experience before advancing to higher-level practitioner training.

Staffordshire University: Situated in the heart of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire University offers academic and professional routes, including a BPS-accredited BSc (Hons) in Psychology and Counselling alongside dedicated postgraduate pathways and university certificates in counselling studies. Their courses provide extensive grounding in core theories including Person-Centred, CBT, and Psychodynamic approaches.

Keele University: Located just on the outskirts of Stoke-on-Trent, Keele University is renowned for its therapeutic humanities programmes, offering respected undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in counselling, psychotherapy, and clinical psychology.

Specialist providers

Specialist providers focus exclusively on counselling and psychotherapy, often providing a more immersive and community-focused training experience than general colleges.

North Staffs Mind Training: In addition to their mental health provision, North Staffs Mind runs specialist workshops and training opportunities for counsellors in training, hosting placement opportunities and professional development sessions tailored to local community needs.

Astranti Connect: Formerly known as the Devon and Cornwall Counselling Hub, we are proud to expand our reach to Stoke-on-Trent learners. We specialise exclusively in CPCAB-accredited qualifications, which we believe offer the most rigorous path toward BACP membership. We provide the full suite of training from Level 2 through to Level 6. Our students value our small class sizes (capped at 18) and our tutors who are all practising counsellors. Our training is designed to be practice-ready, ensuring you have the skills to work safely and ethically from your very first placement.

Chrysalis Courses: Chrysalis offers Level 3 and Level 5 counselling courses in the Staffordshire area. They are a popular choice for those interested in a combined approach, as they also offer specialised training in Hypnotherapy and Counselling.

4. Classroom vs Online: what should you choose?

We wish there was a simple answer to this question! Choosing the right format for counselling training can be a bit of a challenge, and, at the end of the day, it all comes down to what you want to achieve in your counselling career and your personal needs and preferences.

manchester-counselling-qualifications

If you’re aiming to become a member of a professional counselling body like BACP or NCS, you’ll need a significant amount of your training hours to be in person. For example, the CPCAB pathway to BACP membership that we discussed earlier requires at least 75% of Level 4 training to be taught in person. This is worth keeping in mind as some counselling course providers offer online-only Level 4 courses, but these won’t qualify you for BACP or NCS membership.

Additionally, any online courses you take need to be live, for example, over Zoom. This is another requirement of the BACP and NCS because they need to be confident that you’ve got the necessary practical experience and skills required to be an effective counsellor or psychotherapist, and it’s more difficult to pick up these skills through self-directed learning.

Here are some pros and cons of online counselling and psychotherapy courses…

Online training does offer some advantages, such as:

  • Greater flexibility
  • Lower costs
  • More options to choose from

But there are also some drawbacks to consider, including:

  • Technical difficulties
  • Distractions at home
  • Potential loss of some social interaction

Ultimately, the decision between online-only, classroom, or blended online-and-classroom courses comes down to your personal preferences and circumstances. And it’s important that you choose the format that best fits your needs and goals.
